Medigap plans are extra health insurance that can be purchased from private companies in order to pay health care costs not covered by Original Medicare.

Typical costs covered by Medicare Supplemental Insurance plans include co-payments, deductibles, and health care for those who travel outside of the United States.

Medicare Insurance Plans in Pennsylvania

Let’s take a look at the components of Medicare.  Medicare includes Part A, Part B, Part C and Part D.

Medicare Part A: Provides coverage for hospital care and is often referred to as hospital care coverage.

Medicare Part B: Provides coverage for physician care and is usually referred to as physician care coverage.

Both Medicare Part A and Part B are considered Original Medicare, which is administered by the U.S. Federal Government.

When someone signs up for Medicare, they are automatically enrolled in Part A and Part B as long as they’re already receiving retirement benefits before turning 65, and those who don’t want to pay the premium for Part B must dis-enroll.

Those who don’t get Medicare automatically have the option to sign up manually for it during the Initial Enrollment Period which begins 3 months before turning age 65, includes the birthday month, and ends 3 months after for a total of 7 months.

Medicare Advantage Plans in Pennsylvania

Medicare Part C: An alternative to Original Medicare and is available through Medicare Advantage plans.  The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) offer Medicare Part C which includes the same level of benefits Part A and Part B provide, and could also include additional coverages.

Medicare Part D: Consists of Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans as well as Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (PDP).  The CMS approves the private insurance companies that offer Part D benefits.  Medicare Part D coverage helps lower out of pocket expenses for prescriptions while also covering certain medication costs.

Medigap: Also refers to Medicare Supplemental Insurance, or Med Supps and is used to cover certain out-of-pocket expenses that are not typically covered with Original Medicare (Part A and Part B).

6 Things you should know about Med Supps

Before getting started with a Medicare Supplement plan, you first have to have Medicare parts A & B in place. Once Medicare is in place, let us help you choose the best Med Supplier plan for your needs & eliminate many first dollar expenses. Remember, you can enroll without health questions within 6 months of your Medicare enrollment.
Prescription drug coverage, Part D, helps pay for medications doctors prescribe to everyone on Medicare. In most cases, if you don't join a Medicare drug plan when you are first eligible for Medicare, you'll have to pay a Part D late enrollment penalty which is permanently added to your Part D premium when you finally enroll.
Once you have chosen your Medicare Supplement plan, you will be billed by the insurance company a monthly premium for your Med Supp plan. This is in addition to the monthly Medicare Part B premium that you pay to Medicare.
A Medicare Supplement plan only covers one person. If you and your spouse both want Med Supp coverage, you will each need to purchase separate policies.

* some carriers do offer a spousal discount when husband & wife enroll together.
You may purchase a Medicare Supplement policy from any insurance company licensed to do business in your state. At Gallen Insurance, we broker with most of the major Medicare Supplement carriers to help you compare plans and pricing.
Even if you have health problems there is no need to worry once you are on a Medicare Supplement plan, these plans are guaranteed renewable. This means that as long as you pay the monthly premium for your Med Supp, the insurance carrier cannot cancel your coverage.
