Our office is wearing Red today in support of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women & its 10th Anniversary!
February is National Heart Health Month, but this week the focus is on women.
Nearly twice as many women in the US die from heart disease & stroke than any form of cancer, including breast cancer. In fact, coronary artery disease, which causes a heart attack, is the leading cause of death for American women.
Did you know that over 90% of all women have at least 1 risk factor? Some of these risks, we simply cannot control, such as:
- Family history of heart disease
- Being over 55 years old
- History of heart attack
There are, however, many risk factors that you CAN control & you can do so starting TODAY!!
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Blood cholesterol level
- Smoking
- Physical inactivity
- Overweight
- Stress
- Excess Alcohol
The American Heart Association has valuable tips on their website www.heart.org for tips on controlling these risk factors.
What are the signs & symptoms of a heart attack in women? Know these signs; they could save your life:
- Extreme fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Indigestion
- Anxiety
- Cold sweats
- Dizziness
- Pain in the jaw, arm, back or chest, even down into the abdomen
